[Splatoon 3] The cause of a communication error that occurs frequently.
The following are causes and solutions for “A communication error has occurred” and “An error occurred while communicating with the server” errors that pop up in Splatoon 3.
Splatoon 3 went on sale on Friday, 9/9/2022. Many people have been waiting for it, with many players immediately posting their gameplay and experiences on Twitter and Youtube.
However, many players have reported communication errors, and there have been incidents where matches have dropped multiple times.
This section goes into some causes and solutions for communication errors.
Causes of communication errors
Communication errors can occur during any match including Regular Battle, Anarchy Battle and Salmon Run and some users even appear to experience them multiple times.
Sometimes a notification suddenly appears in the middle of a match that a communication error has occurred, or at the results screen after the match.
Official channels have announced the cause of the communication error
One cause of this is the server, the developers officially announced they are aware of the common error phenomenon early after the release.
This cause is likely to be resolved as soon as it is addressed in future updates.
It is common for many games to be prone to communication errors after a major update, so check for official information if you feel that communication errors have increased in frequency recently.
Communication errors due to player’s environment
A poor Internet connection on the player’s side is one cause of communication errors during matches. Particularly, when the communication speed is slow or when using a wireless connection the game is prone to becoming unstable.
Check if the Switch’s available memory space is limited
Check to see if your Internet connection equipment (router or cables) are outdated
How to test the connection with the Switch itself
1.Select “System Settings” on the console’s Home screen.
2.Under “Internet,” select “Test Connection.” Check for any problems with speeds or other issues on this screen as well.
Check for any problems with speeds or other issues on this screen as well.
3.Confirm the status of the connection test.
You can check the communication status and speed by conducting the connection test, as well as check the NAT type and upload and download speeds.
NAT type A/B
No problem for a gaming environment
NAT type C/D
Not suitable for a gaming environment
The NAT type is a connection method that varies depending on the environment in which the router is installed, it is also described on the official Nintendo website.
“The results of a NAT test for the network you are connecting to. This will range from A (best for peer-to-peer communication) to F (unable to complete peer-to-peer communication).”

Also, check the communication speed (download/upload).

Download and upload speeds also have their own guidelines for comfortable play. To get an idea of your current communication status, check the communication test if you feel you’re experiencing a lot of communication errors.
Errors from communication with other consoles
In addition to the usual communication error, you may also get an error message that says “Could not communicate with the other console.” This case often resolves itself when the game re-enters a matching status, it’s considered a temporary error.
What happens if you disconnect or get communication errors during a match?
In Splatoon 3, if a user disconnects immediately after the start of a match or a communication error occurs, the match won’t be counted.
Further, if a player disconnects after halfway into the match, the winner is awarded and the loser is considered to have a nullified match.
This information is not officially confirmed and will be updated as soon as it is available.
However, in many cases, the communication error event is not judged as the player’s line going down, and the match is often ended for all players in it.
Penalty for too many disconnections
In Splatoon 3, you can be penalized if connection is lost multiple times. 1-2 communication errors do not seem to have much of a penalty, but multiple communication errors are reported to cause a 3, 5, 7 and 10 minute matchmaking suspension penalty.
As for the penalty time, it seems to be determined by the frequency and timing of the disconnections, and is most likely determined by the system.
[Splatoon 3] What to do if you can’t join or play with your friends.
Splatoon 3 does not have a standard voice chat function in the game itself, so users must use the chat function on the Nintendo Switch Online application, or use an external service such as Discord for voice chat.
The Basics: Settings required for Switch voice chat
First of all, the basic requirement is that you need to connect an earphone with some sort of microphone in order to conduct voice chat on the Nintendo Switch.
Alternatively, if you use a dedicated voice chat application, you will need a smartphone, tablet, or other device capable of making calls.
The Switch itself does not have a microphone function, however, earphones with a microphone can be connected through the earphone jack.
The earphone jack is located at the top of the Switch body.
Also, unlike PS4/5 and Xbox controllers, the Switch controller does not have an earphone jack.
Because of that, if you want to connect headphones in a way other than into the Switch itself, you will need to purchase a special controller with an earphone jack or use a chat application on your smartphone or tablet.
Regarding Bluetooth Connection
The Switch itself supports audio connections via Bluetooth, but does not support microphone use via Bluetooth (as of September 2022). Because of that, the microphone is not usable with a Bluetooth connection.
Voice chat in the “Nintendo Switch online” application
This section describes how to install the “Nintendo Switch Online” application on a smartphone or tablet to make calls with.
First, install the “Nintendo Switch Online” app on your smartphone or tablet from the app store.
Click here to install the Nintendo Switch Online app.
Appstore Googleplay
After installing the application, you will need to login with your Nintendo account. Log in with your account.
After you have logged in, the “Voice Chat” option can be found under the profile menu. If you and the person you want to voice chat with are both playing the same game, the target game will appear in the “Voice Chat” section, and you can start the call from there.
Since voice chat settings on the Splatoon side are also required, we will describe how to set up the game settings later.
Side note, you must also be a Nintendo Switch Online subscriber to use voice chat. On top of that, accounts under the age of 13 cannot use voice chat.
If the app is not running properly, try updating your smartphone or update the “Nintendo Switch Online” app itself. iOS or older versions of Android might not launch properly.
Next we’ll set up Splatoon on the Switch side. To set it up, enter the lobby and select Match with Friend from the lobby menu.
When creating a room, the ON/OFF setting for voice chat will appear. Turning this setting ON will enable voice chat for the game on the “Nintendo Switch Online” application.
If you create a room with voice chat ON and enter each other’s room, the “Nintendo Switch Online” application will initiate voice chat.
Selecting “Start” will enable the call on the application.
Use an external chat service such as Discord or Messenger app
Another option is to use an application that allows voice chat, such as Discord or Messenger app.
Discord is used by many gamers and is the standard for voice chat applications, so we recommend installing it if you want to use voice chat in the future.
How to use Discord and what to do when you cannot hear the other person’s voice or cannot get audio
Check to see if the person is muted or if volume is set to zero.
Discord allows you to mute certain people’s voices or adjust the audio volume, so if you cannot hear a particular person, right-click on the user’s name and check the audio settin
[Splatoon 3] What to do if you can’t join or play with your friends.
In order to play with friends on Splat 3, you need to have them as a friend on your Nintendo account.
Go to My Page on the Switch Home screen and go to “Add Friend” to send a friend request or accept your friend’s request to become a friend.
Cause/Issue (2): Tutorial incomplete/You haven’t reached the rank you need to play
In order to play online with a friend in Splatoon 3, you have to complete the tutorial where you play a single game of Turf War.
Head to the lobby and complete the tutorial.
Keep in mind, Anarchy Battle can’t be played with a friend until you reach Rank 10.
Salmon Run can’t be played with friends unless the training tutorial is completed.
In Salmon Run, you can skip the training by pressing the B button after the first part. If you want to get to playing with friends as soon as possible, feel free to skip the training.
Cause/Issue (3): Your online status is set to private
If you are not seeing your friends on your friends list, check to see if you and your friends’ online statuses are set to display.
You can go about that as follows.
My Page > User Settings > Friend Functions | Friend Settings > Display online status to:
Make sure it is set to “All Friends” or alternatively, you can designate your friend as “Best Friend” and set the setting to “Best Friends.”
Cause/Issue (4): Check your internet status
An Internet connection is required to play with friends online.
Check to make sure your Internet connection is good. Select “System Settings” from the Home screen.
Under “Internet” you can see the status of your Internet connection.
If you aren’t connected, check and confirm your Wi-Fi and Internet settings.
Cause/Issue (5): Restart the game/Switch console
If you still can’t play with friends after trying steps 1 through 3, try restarting the game or Switch console.
You should try restarting at least once for any game error.
Quite often, people who changed their settings but still cannot play have found that after restarting, their settings have been updated and they can play again.
To “Close the software” you can press the Home button → X button.
To restart the Switch, press and hold the power button at the top of the Switch → Power Options → Restart → Press the same button 3 times to start.
